Personnel

The Union County Sheriff's Office is made up of four divisions - Administrative, Uniform Division, Criminal Investigation Division, and Jail Division.  Each division are important components in maintaining quality law enforcement services for the citizens of Union County.

 Chief Deputy

Chief Deputy Roger W. Gregory

Roger Gregory began his tenure in the Union County Sheriff's Office in November of 1976, serving as a dispatcher /  jailer and later as a Patrol Deputy under Sheriff J. Harold Lamb.  He later worked as Patrol Deputy, Training Officer and  Investigator  under Sheriff William A. Jolly.  When Sheriff Wells took office in  1993,  he headed up the Patrol Division as Captain  before taking the reins as Chief Deputy in 2001 under Sheriff Wells. Gregory is the only Deputy still working that has worked for Sheriff Lamb, Sheriff Jolly, and Sheriff Wells.  Chief Gregory oversees the daily activities of the Deputies, is responsible for training, evidence inventory, sex offender registry, and maintains this website.

Administrative

The Clerical Support Staff of the Sheriff's Office consists of four civilian employees. Linda C. Jenkins,  Administrative Assistant to the Sheriff; Shannon D. Deaton,  Criminal History Analyst; and two Clerks; Carolyn Yarbrough, and Shelia Hunnicutt.  Each lady has their own responsibilities and duties each day, but all are cross-trained to insure that all positions are covered in the event of absences due to sickness and or vacations.

The Administrative Assistant to the Sheriff acts as the General Office Manager and supervises the work of the Criminal History Analyst and the Two Clerks. She handles all the Personal Secretary Duties for the Sheriff and generally assists all of the employees in the Sheriff's Office with their duties. She also works closely with the Command Staff in preparing the annual budgets for the Sheriff's office. The Administrative Assistant assures that all areas of the office run smoothly and efficiently within our annual budget.

The Criminal History Analyst works daily with bookings, dispositions, criminal history checks, ticket inventory, N.C.I.C. validation, time sheets, subpoenas, orders of destruction, sex offender registry, and other office duties when time permits.

The two Clerks answer the several telephone lines at the Sheriff's Office. Some of their duties include the filing of all civil process and criminal warrants received by the Sheriff's Office and disbursing them to the Deputies for service, the daily processing of incident reports, supplemental reports, pawn tickets, and greeting and assisting visitors that come into the Sheriff's Office , as well as providing Criminal History Checks for housing and employment applications.

Criminal Investigation Division

The Investigations Division is composed of four criminal investigators and two narcotics investigators. The criminal investigators are responsible for the investigation of crimes reported to the Sheriff's Office that require an investigation. These crimes range from assaults and burglaries to more serious crimes such as criminal sexual conduct and murder.

The Narcotics Officers are responsible for the investigation of illegal drug activity within Union County. They work closely with other agencies within the County and State to arrest and prosecute violators of drug offenses in Union County.

The present jail was built in1996 and 1997 with opening day being July 1, 1997. The S.C. Dept of Corrections rated the jails capacity at 26 for males and 2 for females. In 2005 an addition was added primarily for females bringing the total rated capacity to 40. The building is a direct supervision, single level facility with approximately 13,000 square feet of floor space.

The average daily population in 1998 ( first full year of operation) was 10 inmates. Since that time, the average daily population has increased to 48 as recorded during the first half of 2007.

The Jail is staffed by 20 full time personnel. The jail Administrator is also a certified police officer. His hours are normally first shift.  The four shifts are composed of a Corporal in charge of the shift and three jail officers. They work 12 hours and rotate shift every 28 days, working 14 days out of 28. The jail also has two support officers. They work 8 hour shifts during the jail's peak times.

The County Jail has a working contract with an area Health Clinic. The jail is located three and one half miles from the local hospital.

The Jail houses inmates arrested by the Union County Sheriff's Office, State Agencies, and has contracts with two municipal police departments to house their inmates.
